5 Signs Your Business Website Needs a Redesign

Websites age faster than most business owners realise. A site that looked modern five years ago may now feel slow, awkward on phones and out of step with how your business has grown. Because the decline is gradual, it is easy to miss — until you notice competitors winning customers you should have won.

Here are five clear signs your website needs a redesign, and what to do about each.

1. It loads slowly, especially on mobile

Most of your visitors are on phones, often on mobile data. If your pages take several seconds to appear, many visitors will leave before they see anything. Speed also affects Google rankings through Core Web Vitals.

How to check: Run your homepage through Google PageSpeed Insights and look at the mobile results — particularly Largest Contentful Paint (LCP). Then simply open your site on your own phone using mobile data, not office Wi-Fi.

Common causes: oversized images, heavy page builders, too many plugins, sliders and autoplay videos, and cheap hosting.

2. It is hard to use on a phone

Pinching to zoom, tiny buttons, text that runs off the screen, menus that do not open properly — all signs your website was designed for desktop first. Customers will not struggle through it; they will go back to Google and tap the next result.

How to check: Try to complete the most important action on your website — calling you, sending a WhatsApp message or submitting an enquiry — using only your thumb. If it takes more than a few seconds, it is too hard.

3. It no longer reflects your business

Outdated services, old photos, team members who left years ago, missing products, a 2019 copyright line — these small details quietly tell visitors the business may not be active or reliable. Your website should look like the business you are today, not the one you were when it was built.

This is especially important if you have moved upmarket, added services, entered new cities or started exporting. A website that undersells you costs you the customers you most want.

4. It does not generate enquiries

This is the most important sign. If you cannot remember the last time a customer said “I found you on your website”, something is wrong. Usually it is one of these:

  • The homepage does not clearly say what you do and for whom.
  • There is no compelling reason to choose you over competitors.
  • Contact options are hidden or forms are too long.
  • There is no WhatsApp button, even though customers prefer messaging.
  • Nobody is tracking enquiries, so you genuinely do not know.

A redesign focused on conversion — clear messaging, proof, and easy contact — often has a bigger impact than any amount of extra traffic.

5. Updating it is painful

If every small change requires calling the original developer, your website will always be out of date. Modern websites let you edit text, images, services and blog posts yourself in minutes. If your current site runs on outdated software that cannot be safely updated, it may also be a security risk.

How to redesign without losing your Google rankings

A redesign done carelessly can wipe out years of search visibility. Protect yourself with these steps:

  1. Audit before you change anything. List the pages that receive traffic and enquiries today (Google Search Console and Analytics show this).
  2. Keep or redirect every important URL. If a page address changes, set up a 301 redirect from the old address to the new one.
  3. Preserve valuable content. Improve it rather than deleting it.
  4. Migrate tracking. Make sure Analytics, Search Console, ad pixels and conversion tracking work on the new site from day one.
  5. Monitor after launch. Watch Search Console for errors and ranking changes in the weeks after going live.

Redesign or rebuild?

Sometimes a refresh — new design, improved content, speed fixes — is enough. Other times the underlying platform is so outdated that rebuilding is cheaper in the long run. A short audit will tell you which applies to your site.

If two or more of the signs above sound familiar, it is worth getting a professional opinion before you lose more customers to faster, clearer competitors.
